I have at the same time to ask your general authority to provide in the Estimates for 1905 for the same staff with such additions, deductions, or alterations as may be found necessary, due regard being had to strict economy, as it will be impossible to ascertain what arrangements may be required for next year until the year is well advanced.
7. You will observe that in the Estimate, no remuneration is provided for the Members of the Court. Mr. Clementi is at present drawing his salary as Assistant Registrar-General; Mr. Fletcher is acting for him on the pay of a Passed Cadet. I have decided that this arrangement shall obtain until the end of June next, when it was originally anticipated that the work of the Land Court would cease. Thereafter, I think that the following arrangement would be fair, and I would recommend that it continue until such time as all claims have been heard and determined, and the Land Court ceases to exist. That a vote be taken on account of the Land Court for the amount of half Mr. Clementi's salary as Assistant Registrar-General, and that Mr. Fletcher should then draw one-half of such salary, with half his own pay as Passed Cadet; the other Officers to remain as at present.
8. I desire to take this opportunity of informing you that Mr. Gompertz was in no way responsible for the inaccuracies in the survey referred to in paragraph 2(1) of my Despatch No. 578 of the 18th December last, and of explaining that when Mr. Gompertz estimated for the Land Court for 6 months only of the current year, he was only calculating for the work of dealing with disputed claims, leaving the Land Officer...
